Dave wrote about Robert Palmers' Philly shot:
"...This shot says "Philly", and I've never been to Philadelphia, so the
photographer put me there, and conveyed a feeling through his image that
more than just a railfan can understand. I was waiting for a Philly
beef and cheese sandwich to fall out of the screen."

I liked this shot too but didn't give it my number one vote for the
month. I suspect I got sucked in on one of these orange shots. I did
have it as close runner up and made a comment that I thought it was the
best image Robert had posted on the site. Unfortunately I don't think
Philly does the shot justice. :^)
I know that some of us think of AMTRAK railroad subjects is an
oxymoron and avoid it like the plague but it makes a nice shot in a lot
of different settings. The neutral silver metalic/grey/white pick up
and reflect the light of a scene better than of the other schemes found
on "real" railroads. There are alot of elements in that image that are
pleasing (i.e., curves, catenary, etc.) however the clean glass and
metalic skyline of the city seems to work with the train.
The affect of the city sky line can really influence the shot.
Those of you familar with Burlington Iowa can picture that a similar
AMTRAK consist under the Hotel Burlington and understand the impact a
sky line can have on a shot.
I perfer a country setting for the majority of my shots and often
try to use my 400 and 200mm lens to crop out signs of civilization.
Oddly enough I also like those city sky line shots because they're the
opposite of my rural shots. Notice that in most published pictures we
seldom see trains in suburbia (ironic since I think the majority of us
live there).
For what its worth when I think of Philly railroading I think of the big
AMTRAK station and the trackage that winds it way along the Surekill
Highway. :^)
