Correct. I get several pro photographer and digital mailing lists, and the
consensus in the business is that the software is very troublesome and
there are reliability problems with the hardware (scanner and slide feeder
too). Some users reported having to turn the unit on its side after a half
dozen scans to avoid out of focus problems. Separate supplemental
scanning software is recommended (it's included with the Japanese version
only). The scanner itself looks good, and the new digital ICE technology
for eliminating surface (not in the exposure - in the picture) defects like
fingerprints and scratches is said to work good - when it works. Scanner
users are still complaining about the poor Nikon support, mostly that they
won't call you back, but the usual problems, too. As one other
photographer that bought and tested the new Nikon LS-2000 scanner said:
"It's a cute baby, but a bit premature".

I don't have a bias on the situation (more like only a professional
opinion), but obviously I won't tolerate a scanner of any price that won't
work right and is difficult or impossible to install on some operating
systems (like Windows95, and Mac OS8).

Opinion: It probably could have been a good product if Nikon Electronic
Imaging would have fixed the hardware bugs before releasing it for sale,
and if they had some software written for the scanner (and most of the rest
of their scanners) that just simply worked correctly. Nothing fancy, just
able to install and work right...

I still have to recommend the Polaroid SprintScan Plus, which just took a
welcome $200+ price cut on the PC version last week.
