I've found that in the east, very few locations are good for both a 50mm and a telephoto lens. It either works for one or the other, but rarely both. I'm also of the philosophy that the best photos are an overall scene with the train being the main component and I choose locations with that in mind. The best angle for a telephoto shot seems to be a head-on view where as the best angle for a 50mm is a 3/4 or a broadside view, preferably with a little elevation. I don't usually choose a location that only works with a telephoto, although after the positive feedback to my Amtrak Philly shot, maybe I should change this.
