A quick trip to Cajon last weekend included a gab session with some
younger fans in the Summit area. These were serious shooters who haven't
been doing the train chasing thing very long, and one of them inquired
about my "shooter's clothing" which seemed exceptionally suited to train
chasing. So I will post something that I've yapped about before...

I have found that one of the greatest things to make your field
photography more comfortable is "cargo pants"...the pants derived from
military BDUs that have big, square pockets in the thighs. They are
great for carrying notebooks, large quantities of film, etc, without
getting in your way when you hop in and out of a car, etc. AND, they are
not very fashionable, so (unlike many kinds of blue jeans) you can find
them for $40 or less at a number of stores.

The best source of these (as well as other field-tested outdoors
clothing) is Cabela's, a big mail order hunting and fishing place in
Nebraska. Order their free catalog at 1-800-237-4444 and look at two
products in particular...the "trail hiker pants" and the "adventurer
pants."

There are literally dozens of other items in their catalogs...clothing
and otherwise...that a field photographer will find useful.

This company has earned a well-deserved following from news
photographers and other non-hunter, non-fisherman types whose work
demands sturdy clothing at a reasonable price.
