Two of my favorites:

The Santa Fe main between Streator and Ancona, Illinois:
The railroad is on a mostly north/south alignment between
these two towns. Seems you can find decent shots of trains
going in either direction during the best lighting hours here.

Also, with CTC signaling and lots of talk on the PBX channel
during the week, movements can be fairly easy to anticipate.
I spent most of the day here on 6/1. Seemed there was always
a train around. Mondays used to be dead.

The classic Streator depot is still in use by the MofW forces.
It works nicely into morning shots of westbounds.

The Santa Fe Needles Sub:
This place is a wonderland for a native of the rust belt like
myself. All kinds of photo potential, especially in the winter
months. A favorite is the Colorado River bridge at Topock
(sorry, this is actually on the Seligman sub. but close enough).
Also, seeing westbounds work up the hill at Klondike in the
morning is truly a experience.

The abundance of photo locations combined with clean, cheap
lodging in Laughlin make this a great foaming destination.
Many of the hotel/casinos in Laughlin (30 mi. north of Needles)
offer rooms at approx. $18.00 per night, Monday thru Thursday.
Sometimes they offer stay a night, get a night free at this price.
They also offer reasonably priced food and drink. Between rail
photography and the casino entertainment you can't get bored here.
I highly reccommend it.
