For those of you who love those ugly, distracting orange and white fiber
optics marker poles along various western railroad rights of way in their
photos, you'll be happy to hear that there will probably be a lot more.

In this morning's Rocky Mountain News (Denver), June 24, it states that Level
3--a telecommunications start-up that plans to build a high-speed Internet-
based phone and data network--now has agreements with the BNSF and UP to lay
fiber optics along 9800 miles of right-of-way: 2000 miles along the BNSF and
7800 along the UP. Constructon is expected to begin in July.

Level 3 plans operations in 28 states offering service to 26 major cities
including Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and St. Louis. They hope to
have their network completed by 2001.

BNSF is quoted as saying that this agreement is "one of a handful of deals it
has made recently and that the railroad is negotiating several more."

It would be nice if Level 3 (and all the other companies) would use camouflage
markers, but fat chance that will happen. Happy shooting.
