PhD SCHOLARSHIP

Rowing New Zealand, New Zealand Academy of Sport, 
and AUT Institute of Sport and Recreation Research NZ
are looking to appoint a PhD research student to 
undertake research in rowing biomechanics.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this scholarship (full-time for 3 years) is to:
• To provide a PhD educational opportunity for a student.
• To advance practical experience in line with 
the New Zealand Academy of Sport’s sport science
servicing profile and Rowing New Zealand needs.
• To advance sport science service provision and advancement of knowledge.
• To focus on one of the following priority areas:
    Force gate hardware
    Optimising boat gearing
    Boat trialling
    Data mining

AMOUNT AND TYPE OF AWARD
• There is one award to be made.
• The value of the scholarship is $25,000 stipend 
per year for up to three years full-time study.
• This amount will cover living costs paid as a 
monthly stipend, research related costs and travel costs.
• An additional $2,000 per year is available for 
research expenses and conference travel.
• The recipients will be expected to commence study in 2007.
• Yearly renewal is conditional upon satisfactory 
progress, determined by the primary supervisor through an
annual progress report.
• A large amount of time will be required at the 
Rowing New Zealand national training centre at Lake
Karapiro. It is expected that the candidate will 
be based in Cambridge or Hamilton.

• Reports from two referees with emphasis on 
academic ability and interest in research topic.
• Referees reports must be sent directly and 
confidentially to the Scholarships Office from your referee.
• Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

CRITERIA
• The scholarship is open to international and NZ 
national students. Students must meet the full-time PhD
entry criteria for the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences.
• The quality and contribution of the research.
• The likely contribution to the overall research 
goals of Rowing New Zealand, the New Zealand Academy
of Sport, and the Institute of Sport and Recreation Research New Zealand.
• The provision of evidence of past academic excellence, including research.
Applicants should have experience and a Master's 
degree in Sport and Exercise Science, Biomechanics, Applied
Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Physiotherapy, 
Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences or a related
discipline. Applicants with a BSc (Hons) degree 
will also be considered. An interest in sport and exercise
sciences is essential. Data analysis experience 
(Microsoft Excel, SPSS or SAS) and programming skills
(preferably Labview) are desirable.

part in a telephone interview.
• Applicants will be considered by a panel 
comprising of members representing Rowing New Zealand and
the Institute of Sport and Recreation Research New Zealand.
