Hello All:
Ergometer calibration is essential for valid assessment of exercise protocols.
In many cases researchers must rely on "factory calibration" which may or may
not be accurate. In my lab we are about to perform and exercise intervention
using consumer level exercise bikes. Given the uncertainty of power measures
reported by these bikes we knew that calibration or post hoc correction of data
would be essential. This particular study was funded by a small grant from the
College of Health at the University of Utah and did not include enough funds to
buy an ergometer calibrator as offered for $17,500USD by VacuMed.
So we constructed our own simple but effective and accurate calibrator. Key
elements include: SRM Powermeter, 1.5 hp 100rpm gear motor, and a variable
frequency drive.
A video can be seen at this link:
http://files.utah.edu/neuromuscular_files/CalJig.MOV
Be aware that this is a ~250meg file. Some browswers will attempt to play it
when you click on it. When this happens the first showing of the video may be
very choppy depending on your connection speed. Playing it again, however, was
smooth on the systems I used to test it out.
I hope that this will be useful to you. If you have any questions please feel
free to post here. If Will would like to see additional detail perhaps I could
write up a short article for SportSci.
Cheers,
Jim
