Have you ever gone to test an anti-freeze system, and wondered what they put in it? Glycerin? Glycol?
Was the piping steel, copper or CPVC?

We have run into this a lot lately. The only simple test I know of is from the Noble company, called "No-Burst test strips" They created this product for their No-Burst Glycol radian heat product, but it has a very useful application for fire sprinkler contractors doing testing and inspections. The strips will react (Change color) if there is any type of Glycol in the system sample. Either Propylene or Ethylene Glycol. It will not react if there is Glycerin in the sample. While it would be nice if it would say turn red for Glycol and blue for Glycerin, it doesn't. We still find this a very cheep and useful tool, and one all service and inspection personnel should carry to work on any anti-freeze system.

(Noble is the MFG of Firefighter PG and GL, and should be available from your usual suppliers.)
