Paul, Nice answers, I just wanted to add that State Health Law may affect
the orientation as well as the listing. Not all devices listed for vertical
installation are approved by each State for vertical installations. A call
to the Health Department can eliminate repiping later....

about how the backflow preventer is oriented):

( x ) this depends upon the listing of the device, not all are
