Many good points. How about letting the TV station know!

Okay, here's a re-hash of my favorite themes......

Fire Floods Retirement Home

I understand you've started hearing about how ridiculous we sprinkler guys
think your drowning report is, and I wonder if a man were to have a heart
attack while walking down the street, would a CPR-giver who saves his life
be accused of assault for beating on his chest?

We have the technology to economically save the lives of about 99% of those
who die in building fires. It's an undisputed fact that sprinklers are the
best, most cost-efficient way to protect lives and property from fire.

HOWEVER- public perception is one of our biggest enemies due to the media's
ridiculous slants. Let's go back to the 1960's for a moment- Remember SEAT
BELTS ? The Feds were "shoving them down our throats". They'd add $1,000 per
auto if they are mandated. That was some of the BS you'd hear.
It took a lot of public service announcements, the threat of fines for
non-compliance, and (DUH!) a couple million people's lives being saved
'cause son-of-a-gun, these things really do work after all. NOW when we read
a guy is killed in a car wreck, and the story notes he wasn't wearing his
seat belt, we shake our heads and think "dumb SOB, he'd have walked away if
he'd been wearing it. Sure, it took a generation to get the public
perception to this point, and certainly compliance is far less than 100% of
drivers/passengers. But news reports today invariably include whether the
involved were wearing seat belts, and we'd ask you start the same for our
industry- and for the safety of the public. If you'd start including whether
sprinklers were installed when you report on a fire, maybe your grandkids
will be saved in 30 years when sprinklers are installed IN THEIR HOME and it
catches fire at 2 AM.

Or, you could continue with feeding fuel to the misconceptions that we drown
people with sprinklers and the public will continue dying in their
unsprinklered homes. Sprinklers in my home !!! Omigosh- what if they freeze
and flood the place!!! Hmm. Guess you'll not have indoor plumbing, either
for that argument to hold up. Omigosh- they cost so much!!! Sure, same as
wall-to -wall carpeting that no one seems to be omitting so they can afford
to buy their house.

Hey, we'd like to have you as our ally in this, and maybe move that
sprinkler quietly saving a building report from page 32 to the front page
where the hero characteristics are better off- tragedy averted. Cover a burn
trailer demonstration. Understand that while smoke detectors yell FIRE! A
sprinkler system will yell FIRE! And put water on the fire. DUH- which would
you rather have in your child's bedroom?
