I am working on a project with a wood truss system creating an attic space. The suspended ceiling is 3-4 ft below the bottom chord. Insulation is to be installed between the bottom chords of the trusses and held in place with strapping. Sprinklers will be installed in the attic and below the ceiling. Section 8-14.1.2.13 of NFPA 13 states "Concealed spaces below insulation that is laid directly on top of or within ceiling joists in an otherwise sprinklered attic shall not require protection." Would this be apply to the situation above? I think it boils down to whether the bottom chord of the truss would be considered a ceiling joist if the actual ceiling is not attached to it. If it would apply, would there be any restriction on how the insulation is held in place? If this is not applicable, in what situation would it apply? I have never had the opportunity to use this section before and would appreciate some clarification.

I trust this will be somewhat less contentious that some of the other recent posts..

Thanks.
