Gregg,
I think a lot of bumpers have expanded plastic, if so, u are out of luck
with ESFR. They will need in-racks and standard heads. IF they are not
expanded then NFPA 13, 2007 table 17.3.3.1 will protect 35' rack in a 45'
building with K17 (16.8) at 63 psi.
See NFPA 13, 07 5.6.1.2 for mixed commodities, max of 10 pallet loads of a
higher commodity permitted in a 40K warehouse. U can protect the entire
warehouse for the higher commodity or segregate and protect higher
commodity. This is where u will need a standard system with in-racks. Do not
forget the draft curtain between the ESFR and non-ESFR heads.
Another option is NOT to store in racks and just on the floor. NFPA 13, 07,
table 15.4.1 u can protect 25' storage in a closed array with k25 at 60 psi,
194 gpm x 12 = 2328 gpm plus 250 hose 2578 gpm!
I hope u have a good water supply and fire pump.
Regards
Tom

Subject: Rack Storage of Mix Commodity
Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 16:54:56 -0800
I have a 72,000 sq. ft. 44'-0 high warehouse that is going to be used for
34'-0 open shelf rack storage auto parts. Storage consist of engines,
transmissions, axles, radiators, steel & aluminum wheels, metal doors,
hoods, windows, tail and head lights in cardboard boxes, and plastic front
and back bumpers. My concern is the bumpers. They are wrapped
individually
with shrink-wrap to protect them. They will be stored on the 1st, 2nd and
3rd level of the racks to maximum of 16'-0 high and limited to about a 10%
area of the building. The other 16'-0 to 18'-0 of storage will be the
metal
and/or boxed auto parts. All products are new.
I would like to use the K25.2 ESFR fire sprinkler at 40 psi to protect the
warehouse to eliminate the rack sprinklers. Owner is dead set against rack
sprinklers. The K25 will protect all the commodities except the bumpers.
With the bumpers being limited to 16'-0 high and 10% of the building area,
are they a concern? If so, what would be the best way to protect that
area?
The owner could limit the bumper storage to 8' or 12' and increase his area
of racks for their storage. The problem is the K25 is not listed to
protect
uncartoned unexpanded plastics in a building higher than 40'-0, which the
whole buildings is. So that is the problem, how do you deal with the
bumpers?
