Tom,
The only difference from pendants as regards obstructions is that single
obstructions up yo 4 in. wide can be ignored with uprights. It's
application is much more limited than pendants, e.g. it has a 35 ft.
building height limitation and can only be used to protect cartoned
unexpanded plastic.

Joe,
What is the obstruction criteria for an upright ESFR? FM 2-2 and
NFPA13 is not clear. Can you provide some guidance or point me to a
code section I have missed? I know is it less then the pendent ESFR
but what to you follow? I have been told it has the same criteria as a
standard head , is this correct?
Thanks
Tom

Dan,
That is almost exactly what was tested. The concern was that the
upright would operate first and prevent the pendant from operating.
It operated first, but the pendant operated almost immediately after
it. It makes a good solution for obstruction problems in existing
systems, but the 35 ft. height limitation can be a deal killer.

If there is no problem of mismatch,
Then what about the difference in clearance between the two types.
In one particular case I found the upright at 5in and the pendent at
14in
clearance, next to each other.

No restrictions that I am aware of.
If memory serves me right, FM made an earlier statement that
localized upright ESFR sprinklers could be used within an otherwise
pendent ESFR system. That had to break the heart of the mfg that
developed the first upright (since they are far superior in regard
to obstructions).
Joe - any comments?

Dear All,
What is your opinion regarding the use of upright and pendent ESFR
sprinklers in the same area?
What about mixing brands of different manufacturers?
