George, if there's no potential for storage or pool fires and you
consider run-down from overhead sprinklers, what was the driving force
behind the additional sprinklers? Just curious.

Subject: RE: Low, wide obstructions

When we (#22 committee) discussed the need for sprinklers under
above-ground FRP tanks indoors used as supply for water-based fire
protection systems, I believe 18" was the height that seemed reasonable
to require heads below said tank. Understand we were visualizing no
exposure to pool fires, and no storage allowed below.

In your case, I'd suggest contacting the AHJ and ask- since each case
varies with the history of an Owner's ability to control "misc storage",
combustibility of the plant, what stockpiles or processes may be nearby,
etc.

Subject: Low, wide obstructions

NFPA 13 is very clear about protecting below obstructions over 4' wide.
No stress there. But what if the bottom of a 50" wide duct is only 12"
above the floor? Makes no sense to put a sprinkler below it. If the
bottom were 8' AFF, then the sprinkler's a no-brainer.

Since 13 is mute on this issue, anybody want to share their
rule-of-thumb for determining when to install a sprinkler based on floor
clearance (or lack of)?
