The safest thing to do is leave the fuel out of the tank. Better yet
fill it with a cement slurry.

linked valves? 10' of 1", a brass upright, less time to field install than

Up here in our locale in central Illinois, my previous
experience with this subject was based on my
association with several FM Global engineers.
Gen-erally, we followed these guidelines:

If the diesel fuel supply tanks had proper
contain-ment, fusible link safety shutoff valves on
the supply and return lines, and the room was fully
sprinklered, we did not have to install any
protec-tion below the tank itself.  However, if an
inspec-tion revealed the area below the tank was being
used for combustible storage, and yes we came across
this, protection was then recommended.
