Craig,

I don't think there is any problem with roll grooving schedule 40 pipe.
Am I wrong? We do it all the time.

So did the connections separate or pipe rupture? Did he buy it already
grooved or groove it himself? And if it failed the pressure test, why
did it all fall down, improperly supported?

I don't see where the "it was thinner at the grooved ends" would
automatically mean failure. Unless it improperly grooved, like someone
trying to roll groove sch. 40 in stead of cutting it.

Sounds kinda funny................

Subject: Galvanized Pipe

This one would fall under don't shoot the messenger also. This was
forwarded to me from another AHJ. Have any contractors out there have
any knowledge of this?

Just a quick note that today a sprinkler fitter had over 120 feet of six
inch galvanized pipe fail during a hydro test today. In fact, it would
be fair to say that it violently failed today. After examination by
the
sprinkler company and the fire department, we determined that there were
two suppliers of the pipe. a majority of it made in Turkey and these
sections that failed was made in China.

The entire pipe is properly stamped to meet the standards, through just
by feel only it was evident that the product made in China was
substantially thinner in all of the grooved ends that failed. The
sprinkler fitter is pulling the entire China produced pipe out and
replacing it.

So, as a simple FYI, watch out for the grooved galvanized pipe that is
clearly labeled as Made in China. One construction worker was injured
and it scared the (blank) out of a bunch of other workers as sixty feet
of this pipe came crashing down.
