Craig is correct to find out what company's specific approved usage. The manufacturers data sheets indicate UL listed for fire protection piping. However, follow the link and takes you to UL and it lists the companies and click on "Link to File" and it describes the use and installation VGNJ. Note that the heating cable systems are intended for use on piping "between the system control valve and the system branch lines." The 2002 NFPA 13 doesn't specifically indicate heat tracing except for the Handbook commentary. The 2007 in section 8.16.4.1.5 states, "Where listed heat tracing is utilized for branch lines, it shall be specifically listed for use on branch lines." Some of the manufacturers I spoke with were surprised the 2007 ed. of NFPA 13 allows it for branch lines, and they were hoping UL would give them a blanket approval from past testing on cable systems for branch lines. Well, I'm sure its not going to be that easy.

We are monitoring, but haven't heard of a manufacturer of heating cable systems listed for branch lines.

[Sprinkler System and Water Spray System Devices] Heating Cable Systems for Use on Fire Protection System Piping

See General Information for Sprinkler System and Water Spray System Devices

USE AND INSTALLATION
This category covers heating cable systems intended for use on water- based fire protection system piping to protect the piping when exposed to freezing conditions.

These pipe heating cable systems are intended for use on piping between the system control valve and the system branch lines. The cable systems are intended to be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions, which include requirements for permanent connection to a power supply, supervision of the power circuit, the means of attachment of the cable, insulation and covering to piping, and specific applications limitations.

Unless specifically indicated otherwise by marking on the heating cable or in the installation instructions, the heating cable is intended for use only on metallic pipes.

Note that the heating cable systems are intended for use on piping "between the system control valve and the system branch lines."

Here are a few companies who have submitted and gained UL approval for
heat tracing fire sprinkler piping. Those companies are listed at the

You'll have to go out to the company's web site to find out what their
specific approved usage is.

Subject: Re: Electric Heat Tracing - Background

The use of heat tape went through a major change for the 07 edition,
Now there is criteria in the body that says heat tape shall be
supervised and if used for branch lines, it shall be specially listed
for branch lines. I haven't looked lately but the last time I looked
there were no such listed products.

Greg - was the Chromalox listed for BL's?

As a side note, it still says SMALL UNHEATED AREAS can use antifreeze or
heat tracing. I would say heat trace is intended to be used only for
portions of a systems but considering there are antifreeze systems in
freezers that are 1,000+ gallon systems, I guess small is relative.

Hello again all,

Im looking for the wisdom and experiences off the list for projects
that used electric heat tape for freeze protection. I currently have
a
13R-2002
(metallic piped) project where the owner is looking to use the Raychem

XL Self Regulating heat trace for supplemental freeze protection. The

piping will be insulated as per the code but they want a belt and
suspenders.

Im looking for the code background as to why the appendix specifically

prohibits branchlines - rather forceful language I thought to be in
the appendix and not the code itself but oh well. The project
natually is looking to heat trace the crossmains and branches up to
the drops for the concealed pendants in the living space, hence my
concern.

The product is reportedly listed UL for Fire Protection piping but I
am still awaiting all of that submission, in the mean time I need to
educate myself as to the why's and why not's in the code and
branchline prohibition.

Thank you once again.
