Good afternoon,

Weighing in on the dry pendant in residential discussion - having also seen
this recently myself. I looked at it this way, although my head hurt after
trying to understand it all.

a. In a 13R occupancy we get sent back to 13 for dry systems or dry
portions.

b. 13-99 Section 5-4.5 tells us that we must follow the product listing and
installation documents. It also tells us that these are wet systems ...
well except where specifically listed for dry service.

c. I did some checking with the larger residential sprinkler company
websites and couldnt find a specific listing for residential heads in DRY
systems. Granted I dont know that for an absolute but so far cant find any.

d. While the code may permit it - we know that sometimes this is done
because technology may move quicker than the next code cycle so the door is
left open with the 'SPECIFICALLY LISTED' provision.

e. The use of a return bend is an option in a general sense for dry systems
but since this is residential it still comes down to the head listing. Sure
we can return bend pipe but the head at the end of it isnt listed for such
use or installation.

f. On return bends we must also be aware of 13-99 4.2.2 and the stipulation
that return bends and the connected head be in a heated area. If the cross
main is going across or through the unheated attic then the return bend is
in the unheated area and we then cant use return bends, Let alone the head
issues raised above.

Maybe this is what the AHJ was trying to convey or not, best way is to
openly discuss it and see where its coming from in the code. The above is
how I responded to it in my situation and it seems to make sense. So in the
end I'm saying that pendant heads on return bends in a dry system protecting
a residential setting arent permitted - it just takes 5 steps through the
code to get you there.

But I'd love to hear move discussion on this .....
