Travis,

Unfortunately, it is required and I don't think you will find anything in
the codes allowing you to exempt it. We run into this all the time in
Florida with these wood frame mansards sitting atop concrete/steel
buildings, and then we have to put in a dry system just for that space. The
best option is to convince the architect to use non-com materials if
possible. It makes the installation and maintenance of sprinklers a
nightmare in that space. I've been told they do get struck by lightning and
catch on fire periodically.

Good luck,

As a corallary to this question, what about a building constructed of steel
beams / joists and metal roof deck that also has a 10' tall x 10' wide wood
truss framed mansard sitting atop the perimeter of the roof. I realize it
is a combustible concealed space. However, nothing is going to be in the
space. There is no access from the roof below to the mansard. It is for
architectural looks only. If there was a leak in this space, you would not
know until there was significant amount of water. Would this space need to
be protected? If not, can you point to a section that would allow it to be
omitted?

Subject: Parapets

What is the norm when dealing with parapets which are so constructed as to
create a small (8 sq. ft. x 20' long) combustible concealed area within.
This parapet is separated from the interior of the attic by the plywood roof
decking. I'm trying to relate it to the requirements in nfpa13 2007, 8.15.7
because if areas beneath floors can be non-sprinklered then surely a parapet
would qualify as so not requiring sprinklers. Wouldn't it?
