Peter, As far as calculating modifications to an existing system, assuming that you are talking about relocated sprinklers or sprinklers added off of existing lines, there is no implicit direction to calculate or not to calculate. This is a situation that would require a judgment call. If it is not calculated certain information would need to be known, such as original sprinkler spacing, pressure and flow requirements, hazard, etc... If, say for instance, a few sprinklers are being added because a larger room has been divided into smaller rooms, then calculations may not be necessary so long as the new sprinklers are not creating a greater demand then the original sprinklers. For instance, the original density was .2 over 130 sf per head and the new sprinklers are being installed in areas that will only require a density of .10 over 168 sf per head. The net change in demand is actually less then the original and calculations shouldn't be required. But, on the other hand, if the area in question creates a greater demand because more sprinklers are being introduced into the area that originally had 10 sprinklers at .2 and now ends up with fourteen sprinklers, calculations would be warranted. Anyway, I don't know if this is explained as well as it could be, but I hope it helps. The bottom line is what is the net overall change to the area affected? Based on this information a determination can be made as to wheatear or not you will need calculations.
