Let's be clear with this...for INSIDE applications

From Tyco's cut sheet...
The Model WS Window Sprinklers are listed by UL and C-UL, and NYC Approved (MEA 335-01-E) for use as a "Specific Application Window Sprinkler" and as open sprinklers for "Outside" use. These sprinklers are also recognized by the International Code Council Evaluation Service, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), and the Building Materials Evaluation Commission (BMEC) for use in the Province of Ontario, Canada as providing a two-hour equivalency for a fire separation assembly, when installed in accordance with the NES Report (NER 516), ULC/ORD-C263.1 Appendix A, and BMEC Report (01-11-263).

These heads are recognized by UL for use as "Specific Application Window Sprinklers", but they are NOT recognized by UL, FM, or NFPA 13 as having any equivalent hour rating.

NFPA 13 does not address hourly equivalencies, purposely so.

We have successfully argued many times that using the water curtain provisions within NFPA 13 with standard pendent heads is sufficient. The design parameters are virtually identical, the only difference being the subjective reference to covering the entire surface of the glass.

Depending on the installation, it is very possible that standard pendent heads can be positioned to accomplish this when compared to this one manufacturer's head. I also have to wonder why the other head manufactuerers have not rushed to market with similar products. Are we missing the forest for the trees?

If this is an atrium wall, the prescriptive requirements are in IBC
404.

A code-required fire rated wall must have been tested by an approved
agency such as UL. Two ways to get any-hour rating is with
Fire-protection-rated glazing in the wall or using the Tyco WS
sprinkler which is 2 hour only which obviously qualifies for 1 hour.
But the glass wall MUST follow the construction in the listings.

Here are links to the Tyco information and the ICC-NES report.
