The biggest advantage Cad is the ability to make changes as they occur
without allot of erasing and redrawing. We do allot of design-build where
the building is constantly changing until it is built, and then sometimes
after it is built. It is real easy in cad to make changes such as moving a
main. You just move it to where you want it, and trim or extent the branch
lines to reconnect. Drawing in cad does not necessarily make the initial
design go faster, but it sure takes the heart ache out of changes. When hand
drawing you can forgo detailing repetitive portions of grid systems for
example. With all of the integrated cad programs I have used you have to
draw everything you want listed and/or calculated. When I used to draw with
GenericCad I basically drew the same as I would do by hand. Then did a
manual list and either did hand calculations or used HASS. One thing to keep
in mind, if you have never used a cad program before. There will be a very
steep learning curve until you get used to the program, and your production
is going to suffer at first.

Unfortunately, this program is no longer available. I have a copy, but
haven't used it in a long time. IMHO, this is still the easiest to use and
interpret of all the stand alone programs. I can look at an output and
figure out what is going on in about 10 seconds. No loops or paths, just
what is going on in each particular piece of pipe. There was a rumbling
that someone had acquired the rights and was going to re-market it, but
nothing specific.
From what I understand, Tom is enjoying his retirement somewhere in FL.
