Bob,
One thing to do when using concrete inserts is to talk with the
manufacturer. My experience here in Southern
California is that Hilti has an insert which is specifically listed for
use as part of an earthquake brace assembly,
and others are not listed for that use. Better check with them first.
As for the load capacity I would go with what the manufacturer's data
sheet allows.

I am working on my first calculation for sway bracing using the 2007
edition. Figure 9.3.5.9.1 gives different weight loads for varying
fasteners. I am using concrete inserts, so I am using the manufactures data
for the load capabilities per the note under the section on concrete
anchors. So far so good, using a 3/8" HILTI HDI there is an allowable shear
load of 1250 lb for 4000 psi concrete. Per their data this load includes
the capability of the bolt used for attachment, and there is no reference to
angle as we are given in 13. Since 13 is asking for me to specify an angle
do I assume that any angle can be used at this weight load, or should I
default to the table given for connection to steel with a bolt? Depending
on the figure (angle A-I) these loads can be more liberal or conservative
than the 1250 lb that the HDI is allowing for. I think that I am over
thinking myself on this, so your help is appreciated.
Thank you,
