6.2.8.3 Where sprinkler system piping supplied by a combined system is
supplied by more than one standpipe ("loop" or "dual feed" design), a sign
shall be located at each dual or multiple feed connection to the combination
system standpipe to indicate that in order to isolate the sprinkler system
served by the control valve, an additional control valve or valves at other
standpipes shall be shut off. NFPA 14

Subject: Combined Sprinkler/Standpipes Systems LOOPED

Hello,

I've got a project requiring a standpipe on either side of a 4 story
building. Both of these standpipes are being planned as feeds for the fire
sprinkler system. In other words, at each level the fire sprinkler system
will tap off each standpipe so that it can be looped at each floor. I had
someone tell me that this was against code and that you could tap off each
standpipe but they could not be connected (ie. looped). When I questioned
which code states this they didn't have an answer. I have never come across
a code stating this could not be done - afterall, loops are legitimate
system types defined in NFPA #13. In the past we would put a sign at each
control valve stating that each floor is controlled by two control valves at
each stairwell and everyone was alright with this.

Has anyone ever heard of such a code?

  Thanks,
