Thom, These are outside process columns in a chemical plant, as opposed to structural steel columns, are 40' or more in height and up to 100' and will be support by skirts. We're only planning to go up 30'-40' with water spray rings around the columns.
Sorry I didn't explain well enough. Typically when we did Col. protection we ran down to the proscribed height, (I think it was 15'-0" AFF) with lets say a 30'-0" AFF system height we would typically use a Hilti steel stud with a rod coupling and a split ring hanger as a stand off brace for the drop at about 16'-0" AFF. Alternately we would drill the col. web and use 3/8" rod to a short ear TOLCO Fig. 4 riser clamp again at 16'-0" AFF. The only force your trying to control is the reaction thrust from the sprinkler head. See NFPA 13, 2007 16.1.4 and 17.1.4 or 18.2 (Rubber tire storage actually requires two heads per col. if storage is over 20'-0") Also see annex "C.10" for test data.
