One Fire Sprinkler Head Snuffs Out Fire at Behavioral Health Facility
At 1:18 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2008, Union Colony Fire Rescue
Authority firefighters were called to the North Range Behavioral Health
facility located at 2350 3rd St in Greeley on a fire alarm. When they
arrived, fire crews found the building's occupants standing outside.
Fire crews entered the facility and found that a single fire sprinkler
head had extinguished a fire in the laundry room. A clothes dryer had
had a mechanical malfunction and started on fire. The fire had grown and
generated enough heat to activate the closest fire sprinkler head
causing it to discharge water and extinguish the burning clothes dryer.
The water flow from the sprinkler then in turn activated the buildings
fire alarm system, notifying the occupants to evacuate the building. All
systems operated just as designed and prevented a potentially
catastrophic fire. The fire was confined to the area of origin and
damage was limited to $1,500. All of the building's occupants were able
to exit the building safely and no injuries were reported.
