8.10.4.1 of the 2002 edition says that residential heads are to be no  
more than four inches from the ceiling unless the listing allows  
more.Check the listing. If there is nothing in there that allows the  
deflector distance to be down to 11" then you will need sprinklers in  
the higher pocket.

The ceiling pocket exception is not listed in the code for residential  
heads. Switch to a standard or extended coverage heads instead.

Any code developers know the reason why the ceiling pocket exception  
was left out of the residential head section??? I am curious to know.
