Gentlemen,
Would you please help me?
I have the basement in student’s dorm serving as a storage room approximate
2000 sqft. Around all storage room, along walls, there are storage racks with
the solid wood shelves (storage racks are about 680 sqft). The storage
contains beddings: sheets, pillows and comforters in the small plastic bags.
Room is 9 ft height; first level of rack is 2 ft above floor and second level 5
ft above floor. Commodities are stored to the ceiling of the room.

Please correct me if my approach is not correct:
1. Storage classified as miscellaneous storage
2. Commodities classification: Class IV
3. Storage to be lower min. 18 inch from the sprinklers.
3. Design criteria for ceiling sprinklers based on 12.1.10 (NFPA 13 2002):
1500sqft/0.20 gpm/sqft
4. Since we have solid shelving do we need have in rack sprinklers and need to
apply section 12.3.1.9.2 “Where solid shelving in single-, double-, and
multiple-row racks exceeds 64 sqft in are or where the level of storage exceed
6 ft, sprinklers shall be installed at the ceiling and below each level of
shelving”?
It is not really clear to me that this requirement applies to miscellaneous
storage also.

I would really appreciate you help.
Thank you,

Anna Reich
