A common misconception, based on the requirements of IBC, Chapter 16. In fact, NFPA 13, 2007 requirements for seismic bracing are in accordance with ASCE 7 provisions and are compliant with the intent of Chapter 16. We fight this confusion and overlap on nearly every state-jurisdiction project we do these days. It is NOT the intent of the IBC to make special considerations for sprinkler systems, which is why the code specifically references NFPA 13 in Chapter 9.

Sprinkler piping is subject to rules and exclusions of other piping systems. Anyone else heard of this? Joe C. Powell Pruett Ford & Associates, Inc.
