Ron, I agree with most of your statements except "If for some reason water gets trapped on top of the clapper all that needs be done is open the IT to trip the valve." Water column on top of a DPV seat will prevent tripping through the ITV if the riser is long enough (weight of the column). I have heard others whose thoughts were the concerns for the check valve seat, although I think you will agree this could be accomplished easily by piping methods. What is most important is that the connection be placed where permitted, then it does not matter whose reasoning is correct.

In the final analysis though, I don't think that the FDC connects below the clapper for the reasons you proposed but rather to insure that the gasket on the FDC check valve stays wet.
