This report, ESR-2397 appears to be an update to NER-516, dated January 1,
2004. While I haven't done a detailed comparison, one difference that pops out
at me is the following.

(Old text from NER-516):

"7.8 All combustible materials shall be kept 2 inches (51 mm) from the face of
the glass. This can be accomplished by a 36-inch (914 mm) pony wall.

The evaluation of the use of alternative methods to the pony wall described in
this report to maintain a minimum 2-inch (51 mm) clearance of combustibles from
the face of the assembly is outside the scope of this evaluation. The use of
an alternative method shall be subjected to the specific approval by the
authority having jurisdiction and evidence supporting the alternative
construction shall be submitted to the code official with the application for
permit."

(New text from ESR-2397):

"5.7 All combustible materials shall be kept 2 inches (51 mm) from the face of
the glass, such that the complete coverage of the glass by the sprinklers is
not impeded. This is accomplished by a minimum 36-inch-high (914 mm) knee or
'pony' wall at the base of the assembly. The means for maintaining clearance
must be as set forth in this evaluation report."

It appears the flexibility of the pony wall has been removed. I seem to recall
that the pony wall was once in the cut sheet for this sprinkler but that it was
removed several years ago.

Is there something new here? Quick read it's nothing new. Even the spec
section is old.

Actually it's not an alternate IMHO. Meets the same test standard as other
traditional materials used for rated walls. If the AHJ would allow
sheetrock for example based on a UL listing then they would also have to
accept WS heads. Even further one could use them in an otherwise
unsprinklered building.

Subject: Window Sprinkler for Fire Rated Assemblies

http://www.icc-es.org/reports/pdf_files/ICC-ES/ESR-2397.pdf

I know we occasionally get on the topic of design and such for window
sprinklers for alternate design for interior fire rated assemblies so this
might be worth tucking away for future use.

The ICC Evaluation Service has released an approval and design document for
providing window sprinklers as an alternate to fire rated assemblies in the
IBC.

Best wishes all -
