I ran across an installation (poor) yesterday and could use some assistance identifying two check valves on it. The system is wet piped and is circa 1994. The 3" riser check (definitely not an alarm check) is a red cylinder with a taping for the main drain and a plate 'American Star Valve Corp - Miami Florida Model 3225'. I did a internet search on that information and variations on it and came up with an absolute ZERO. It's factory painted red so I guess that makes it listed for fire service right ? I was a bit puzzled by the absence of exterior casting marks for a clapper hinge or similar and there is no access panel or plate to perform an interior inspection / maintenance. I would presume it was either non-serviceable or designed to be removed from the riser, painful labor expense, to repair or service the unit. The installation took on further mystery when the FDC check valve (leaking to exterior FDC) was finally located and exposed from behind a finished drywall column in the front of the building. The FDC check valve is the same size, color, shape as the riser check - except it has no casting taps for drains and is totally unmarked in any fashion. I presume it's the same manufacturer based on similarities and absence of service cover in the same perfect cylinder shape. Anyone have an idea who American Star Valve Corp is or was / who may have bought them up ? Based on the problems noted during the visit the best course of action appears to be replacement with recognized listed and labeled components but my curiosity is nagging me. Thanks much.
