Yes
We subscribed to the FM Data Sheet subscription service for years in order
to do just that.
We've applied FM criteria on some projects since the owner may wish to
engage FMG at a later date. In standard systems, simply use the 1.4
multiplier and other items where FM invokes more stringent requirements.
Might need a 10 PSI EHP rather than a 7 PSI EHP on some storage
applications.

What you cannot do is provide FM Global plan review/acceptance/approval
since they don't review plans for others- unless they're contracted to
provide engineering or risk management services to a self-insured Owner, or
maybe they've got the top layer of reinsurance.

It's been interesting over the years to inform "EORs" of this when they
writer in all FM-apvd equipment, criteria, and require FM approval of the
plans when FM is not the carrier- how long will it take for the light bulb
to come on?

The question was more to do with can one use FM Standards - Legally, since
they are not involved in the project? Are FM or any other insurance
companies information copyrighted? I do realize you can get their
information online just by signing up which I have done, so does that make
it fair game provided that the AHJ buys off on it?

If NFPA is silent on the subject and FM has a Standard which address the
hazard you are going to disregard the FM info and do what?

In the Industrial realm I deal with there are a lot of times where NFPA has
no specific guidelines for some of the special hazards where FM does. I
have applied the FM data and submitted it to the AHJ's and other insurance
people without one rejecting it. This is because the data is recognized by
the industry as being validated. If you just come off the wing with some
design criteria what will you base it on, research, calculations, actual
field testing?

If you use the FM data just qualify it on your design documents. Plus NFPA
Standards in most every case I've read allow for alternative designs.

More often than not an AHJ will accept an industry standard over "sumthin
that sumbody just thunk up".

Subject: Design Criteria

Forum Members:

Got a question regarding design criteria: Can a project be designed
utilizing FM Global standards although FM is not involved? Got a project
where the design is outside the scope of NFPA 13 however FM Global has a
criteria for the hazard. My answer would be no you can't use the FM Global
criteria since they (FM) aren't involved, any thoughts on this?
