NFPA 13 1985 handbook 4-6 locations to omit sprinklers (exception #4)
Sprinklers may be omitted from attics and crawl spaces which are not used or
intended for living purposes.

Did 13D ever require sprinklers in the attic space??

Attic protection is Outside the scope of 13D. If you choose to protect it,
then I think you would be subject to 13. With the new requirements for
slopes of 4/12 and greater....
As usual, the AHJ can sign off on something.
My 1.28 cents.

Subject: 1984 NFPA-13D

Does anyone out there have a copy of NFPA-13D 1984 ed. I am curious as to
the requirements for protecting attic spaces (if there are any). I have an
existing house that has a 13D system that was installed in 1986. For some
reason, the entire attic space is protected. I have the original drawings
and calc's and the attic portion was designed with a 2-head calc like the
rest of the building. The problem we are having now is that the entire roof
(including the trusses) is being replaced. The original roof had a 3 in 12
pitch. The new roof has an 8 in 12 pitch. What do I now do with the
existing uprights in the attic. Should they just be removed? Or should
they be extended up to the new roof? If I extend them up to the new roof,
what design do I use?
