Thank you for this information. The news director sent me back an e-mail thanking me for the info. Terri thought it might be an auto-reply but maybe dude had second thoughts: Gentlemen: I understand that not everyone can be expert at every aspect of every story. And I understand too that there are nuanced details that may not be obvious to the uninitiated when covering a topic for the first time. But I also would expect that a news organization would at least try to be "fair and balanced" in the presentation of information, whether over the air or on line. To that extent, I am flabbergasted that the first sentence of your story states, "School officials said water from the sprinkler system actually caused more damage than a fire Thursday afternoon at the Indiana School for the Deaf." And that nobody on your staff even thought to ask, "Hmmmm - how much damage would the fire have caused if the sprinklers hadn't have activated?" Or, "How much more water damage would there have been if 4 or 5 or 6 hose streams were dumping water on the school at the rate of 300 GPM each?" Basic rule of fire prevention: Water damage can be repaired; rubble cannot. Had your staff bothered to undertake even a modicum of due diligence, they'd have learned that there is more water damage than fire damage in EVERY successful sprinkler activation, and that most rational people would find that relatively easy to comprehend. Your incomplete reporting of this extraordinary save only serves to perpetuate the public misconceptions about fire sprinklers: that all of them operate at once and that water damage is a huge risk. It would be a benefit to public safety in your community if you would take this and every opportunity to report that neither is true. Unless you would rather have published the article, "Four dead, school destroyed in preventable fire at Indiana School For The Deaf."
