In all fairness, IMO the original poster had a legitimate question
regarding the theory behind the requirement. I think some of the replies
have gone off on tangents that haven't really addressed the original
question or its intent. I don't think the original question submitter is
trying to change the code, but rather trying to understand the reasoning
behind the requirement. Nothing wrong with desiring a deeper
understanding. Course I could have interpreted the original
question/intent wrong myself.

we've been using these for 100 years.
They are simple.
They are codified.
Unless you're willing to submit a proposal to change what we've been
doing,
please- this isn't technical.
You'll need backup for your proposal.
take a 5 gal bucket, 8" wrench, and find a parking garage with
sprinklers.
do your field research, and submit it.
i'd suggest the first 5 minutes you're onsite, have a fitter with ya-
