I wonder if Ron McCullough, fire chief of Glen Rock Hose and Ladder
Co., which I presume is a volunteer department, is a builder in real
life/his day job/whatever you want to call how he makes his money. And
interest rates and credit ratings are what makes houses affordable or
not. The question shouldn't be how much money can a borrower get but
rather how can he get the money. All things considered $10K on a
$250-500K isn't going to amount to any issue of affordability over the
course of 30 years if the buyer can get the credit to begin with. It's
the marginal guys, the one's that were conned into believing they
could afford a half-million dollar loan on a 40K/year salary, and keep
both cars and the boat and take out a home improvement loan (aka
second mortgage), that got us into this mess in the first place.
