Sammys in thick enough steel are listed for quite a bit of weight without the retainer nut

Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone ----- Reply message ----- From: "Thom" <[email protected]> Date: Tue, Oct 12, 2010 1:46 pm Subject: A matter of conscience To: <[email protected]> As Ken said, it has been shown as an acceptable hanger along side of other "Non-listable" hangers (Formed rods, U-hook and Wrap-around U-hook rods) which have a long history of supporting fire sprinkler systems without failure. I would be more concerned if you were in a seismic area, since those loads are not from gravity primarily, as they are in FL. The split ring hanger first appears in the 1999 Handbook Fig. A 6-1.1, prior editions have a similar hanger called the "Malleable swivel Hanger" I can't tell you how many systems I've seen with split ring hangers, but it would literally be hundreds if not thousands. Hanger failure for split rings must not be a widespread problem of NFPA, the committee on hangers and bracing or the CPS people would be all over it. Sleep well, those kiddies are not going to be knocked out because the split rings are un-listed, but more likely because outside in FL they corrode to the point of hanger failure, before they are replaced. A quick look at two manufacturers catalog data showed neither had a listed split ring. Just my thoughts. -- PARSLEY CONSULTING Ken Wagoner, SET 760.745.6181 voice 760.745.0537 fax [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> e-mail www.ParsleyConsulting.com <http://www.ParsleyConsulting.com> website IMPORTANT NOTICE: This correspondence is not a Formal Interpretation issued pursuant to NFPA Regulations.
