In a 4 story apartment building with 2 levels of parking below, the AHJ has specified a design density of .20 gpm /sq. ft. to be used throughout. The construction is of composite joists (TJI's) which are not completely filled with insulation.
If designed using residential heads, under Special Design Approaches, section 11.3.1 (in 2007 NFPA 13) the area would be 4 heads [and the .20 density would be used in lieu of .10 as specified in 11.3.1.2 (2)] Daniel N.
