Thom,

I am not as confident as you are about applying FIGURE A.8.15.22.3 to
Jimmy's scenario: in the figure, both ceilings go wall to wall and the fire
is not under the low ceiling. This whole above and below 'cloud' subject is
more difficult and fascinating than it struck me at first- I am going to
model about a thousand different set-ups to see where the heat goes when it
gets above the opening, just to get a better personal feel for it.

What happened to following the code, Section 8.15.22.3.1 "the sprinkler
system shall extend at least 24 ft (7.2M) into the space above the ceiling.

They will cover to the wall if they activate. If they don't, you have a 2'
wide fire spreading long-ways, and any spreading fire is no good. I believe
protecting the opening is good, just like you and a few others. The question
I have is "where do you put the bulb", without heads all over up above at
12" max?

I would put heads 6'-0 apart to keep from providing two layers of coverage.
I'm just trying to find something to convince the engineer. My heads in the
stepped ceiling will cover to the wall.

Interesting! A 2' perimeter open to above is kind of like the opposite of a
floor opening, where we put water curtains. With no sprinklers above, the
fire should not SPREAD from the wall toward the middle more than a few feet.
A draft stop all the way around with heads on the inside at 6' seems a
little much, but has precedent. If you sprinkler around the opening up
above, what is your deflector distance? If it is 12", as the ceiling steps
down, the head above gets farther from the heat. You know the heat is going
to be a few inches above the opening- so using the same logic as with rack
sprinklers, wouldn't that be the best deflector (bulb) location? Now there
are two weird things to get approved...

I know this has been talked about before, but I am having trouble getting
onto the archives.

I have a situation in an auditorium/lecture hall that has a ceiling that
steps down as you get closer to the front of the room. However, there is
about a 2'-0 perimeter around the room that is open to the non-combustible
space above the ceiling. In this case I'd be willing to sprinkle around the
opening (sort of like 8.15.1.5 in the '07), but it seems pointless to
provide coverage over this entire lowered ceiling. Is there any code that
backs this up? I thought I've heard some, but I don't know where it is.

Thanks,
