Herb; 2007 Edition see 6*3 condition 3. . . Piping connected to the system that supplies only plumbing fixtures complies with local plumbing and health authority requirements but is not required to be listed.
2010 Edition see 6.3.3.1 (same text as above.) 6.3.3 All piping in the system supplying sprinklers shall be listed and conform to piping specifications of this standard. This is the same as condition 2 in 2007 My note: not an official interpretation of a committee member bla bla disclaimer required because I was a committee member in 2010 cycle Everything before the sprinklers must be listed. Only piping off the system to a fixture can be not listed by UL or other lab. (And plumbing pipe and fittings and sprinklers must have NSF approval for potable water.) Hope this helps. My internet is down so I had to send this with my phone sorry. Nice to hear from you. I have come across some interesting stuff lately regarding multipurpose systems and wanted to run it by you. I have plumbers and the mfg rep from Uponor telling me that it is perfectly legal and acceptable to install a normal domestic plumbing system using non listed PEX pipe and non UL listed (1821) fittings and tie it into the sprinkler heads. They say the way they read the code (they haven't been able to identify the code number yet) as long as the fitting with the sprinkler is listed, the 'T' off the plumbing system is listed, and the PEX in between is listed they are legal and conforming to code. This seems wrong to me. It defeats the purpose of requiring the fire sprinkler system to be composed of UL 1821 listed components if 95% of the pipe and fittings between the incoming water and the sprinkler system is not listed for fire.
