Bobby,

My experience with what you describe is that unless there is an automatic shut-down of the painting equipment when the doors are opened, then the room in which the paint booths are located becomes a part of the paint booth and requires the same level of protection.Even though paint booths today are built with rated enclosures, one can still pull a hose through the door and spray outside the booth. This requirement came from the AHJ on 2 jobs I was involved with where auto repairs and auctions took place.

I have a project I am bidding - the facility has 2 fully enclosed paint booths under roof. They are calling for .40/entire area in each booth and
.15/1500 at the roof throughout the facility (paint storage and other
hazards are in separate rooms attached to the outside and protected at the
appropriate hazard). Can the area over the paint booth at the roof be
.15/1500 as the rest of the roof systems or would this need to be greater? There is no wall to the ceiling at the booth it is open to the remainder of
the facility.

Thank you,
