Subject: RE: Extended Coverage Dry SW for STORAGE

At .3 for Storage you're going to have to find a 8K or larger SW head.

Closest is Tyco SW-24 for up to 16'x24' discharge BUT only listed for OH-2.
Other than that, there are no other options if in fact the area requires a
.30 criteria. It really depends on what criteria they used to determine the
.30 as being suitable for the storage commodity located within this area.

So sorry but SW's are not an option on the plate for this application. They
should have done some research before specifying a flying, purple unicorn.

Not at this point; they don't want a dry system and want wet SW's. They
haven't said what the storage criteria is but said to protect it at .3/2500.

Bad idea. Guess they won't back up on their concept of SW's huh?

Whether the head will transmit enough cold to cause a freezing condition
inside depends on the climate. But I wouldn't put any money on it unless
you were in S. Texas, Arizona, Fla or So. Cal.

Just curious but what density did they call out for the storage area? Did
they list what materials were being stored or just pick a "it felt good"
Hazard category from NFPA 13?

OK I sent the question to the Arch/Engineer and they said they want to use
wet SW's and if only the head is outside and pipe is in an insulated wall it
won't freeze(?!?!?!). So now I need to find an EC SW listed for storage that
will throw 16' under one canopy and 22'-0 under the other. Of course I
cannot find one; any know of any I might be overlooking?

Thank you,

If it's in the spec you need to provide it. What's the problem?

Seriously, if it's storage they should have considered a dry system based on
the depth of the area.

The walkway, not enough info. If it's just a convenience walkway and not
part of a required egress path, constructed of non-combustible components,
not designed to accommodate any storage and separated from the occupied part
of a building by a non-combustible separation it PROBABLY won't require to
be sprinklered but more info would have to be shared to render a more
substantial yeah or nay.

Anyone heard of one of these? Project we r bidding is asking for Dry
sidewalls for exterior storage canopies - one is 22'-0 deep and the other is
16'-0. The best I could find was an EC Dry SW for OH that throws up to
20'-0. I believe they need a dry system for each one.

While I am at it they have a "covered walkway" (as its labeled) 11'-6 deep
attached to building - not requesting sprinklers but I feel they will have
to it. What say ye?

Thanks,
