I wouldn't consider this a canopy or porte-cochere but rather an extension of
the horizontal exit or exit corridor. If you look at 8.15.7.4 the only
allowance for omission of sprinklers in such exterior exit corridors is when
the walls are 50% open. Doesn't sound like this exemption is met by this
installation.

The architect would have to include this tube in his egress length calculations
since you are not technically "out of the building" until you reach the end of
the tube.

Just at a quick glance it would sound like you may have to extend sprinklers
the length of the tube.

It will be interesting to see how the AHJ interprets this section of 13.

Thank you - you actually walk through this tube to get to the front door of
the office from the parking lot. It is attached to the building and self
supported and sits on the ground. It has a flat walk in it that is about 5'
to 6' wide. It looks like a piece of pipe that is sitting on its side on the
ground and has settled in just enough to create a flat walk, if this makes
any sense.

If the tube is not suspended and open on the sides I do not think it will
qualify as a canopy or porte-cochere.If the floor is flat and hard storage
could be problem, even if you asked the local AHJ and get approval a change
in reviewer can stop your project. Gerald Schulhoff SET
