NFPA 101, Life Safety Code specifies the fire resistance rating required to enclose a vertical opening. See chapter 7, Means of Egress for stair enclosures. Without having it at hand, my recollection is that a stair connecting 3 or fewer floors needs one hour minimum. More than 3 floors needs two hour. I will check in the morning.
