The water storage tank supplies the fire protection demand, either water
required for the fire sprinkler demand or water to meet a fire flow
requirement and sometimes both. There must be a source of water that will
initially fill and then replenish the required amount of useable water
within the tank in an 8 hour time period. There is nothing that I am aware
of in the NFPA codes or the building codes that would require the pump
supplying water the a storage tank to be listed for fire protection use or
for that matter the materials used for the fill line to be listed either.
Those components are not part of the fire protection system. The valve which
maintains the level of water in the tank should be listed.

Subject: Re: Pump supplying water storage tanks

As long as the tank is holding all of the demand water that is needed then
it should not be required to be a fire pump.
