Appreciate this, Cecil, since we're looking at a retrofit with existing
mansards. I drive by the place every day, and offered to make my price sky-high
so they'd strip the ugly things off the building!
Along the same lines, when a combustible overhang is to be protected if over
48" wide, does that include the additional width of a noncombustible rain
gutter? DOH is involved, FWIW.

Subject: RE: Mansards - NFPA 13

We put allowances in the 2010 edition. But you gotta meet the four criteria
found after the following paragraph.

Let us know if your mansard meets the requirements.

8.15.1.2.18 Sprinklers shall be permitted to be omitted from within combustible
soffits, eaves, overhangs, and decorative frame elements that are constructed
in accordance with
8.15.1.2.18.1 through 8.15.1.2.18.4.

It should be recognized that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA,
and has not been processed as a formal interpretation in accordance with the
NFPA Regulations Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not be
considered, nor relied upon, as the official position of the the AFSA, NFSA,
NFPA, nor any of their technical committees.

Sincerely,
