The NFPA 13 Handbook clause 9.3.2.4 informative text and A.9.3.2.4 suggests pipe connections between roof and freestanding racks allow for a 5 percent differential lateral movement to allow for earthquake seismic events. Does anyone know what type of seismic event the 5% figure is based on? Having had a number of earthquakes in New Zealand recently this is one of the items I would like some more information on to try and determine if our practices and standards are adequate.
