A low level alarm that meets NFPA 20-(2010) 12.4.1.4(7) is supposed to alarm
at 2/3rds level. That is considered "low level". It's a required signal.

Thank you Craig.

Per 11.4.6.2 we plan on installing a sensor to determine when the tank is at
the two-thirds level and that sensor will be wired to the controller as
there is a receptor supplied. The owner wants to use this level as their low
level so they will maintain this much fuel at all times.

Does this sound acceptable?

Sight tubes cannot be used for determine fuel levels, (11.4.2.6.1) it must
be a monitored signal device. With automatic run testing it could be months
before someone actually went into a pump room and looked at the sight tube
to see what the level is.

11.4.2.4 says you need to provide a device that will provide a signal,

11.4.6.2 says at what level the device needs to alarm.

They go hand in hand.

One is a switch and the other can be a sight glass.

Subject: Diesel Tanks NFPA 20

I know this is an NFPA 20 question, but I am hoping to get clear on
something if anyone can help.

NFPA 20:

11.4.2.4 A means shall be provided in the tank for low fuel level signal
initiation.

11.4.2.6.2 A fuel level indicator shall be provided to activate at the
two-thirds tank level.

If I am correct, 11.4.2.6.2 is requiring an indicator to activate when the
tank is 1/3 below its capacity, and I assume that this is so they can
maintain a minimum amount of fuel at all times (if they react when
notified). Wouldn't this also act as the low fuel level signal that 11.4.2.4
is requiring?

Thank you,

Bobby Gillett
